THEY TALK AMONG THEMSELVES TO NO ONE ELSE by Wero Łęska
That one’s an alto, this one’s a baritone, thunder and tone, tempo, tenor, howl, and bass, a flock of us honks and plays, clucks and quacks, coos and caws, cock-a-doodle, clatters, squeals, hooting, hits, rhythm and feels, disco, rhyme, whistles, chants, squeals and pops, sopranos, swish, rustle and booms, howls and gongs: We call this home! Here, each one chirps, hisses, creaks, screeches and bleats, shouts and beats – chi, chi, chi, chi, chi, chi, chi, chi, chi, chi, chi, chi* – does it sound neat? And they: rattle, gobble, chatter, flutter, clatter, chirp and scatter, trill and facking encore, louder!
*The original tone of this literary device is different. The sound „czy” in Polish is the second syllable of the word „liczy” (meaning „counts”). However, „czy” can also function as an independent particle used in questions (similar to „whether” in English). In the context of enumeration, as in „[…] czy, czy, czy […]”, it becomes part of an onomatopoeic expression imitating bird sounds. The phrase „takty liczy czy dobry beat” means „counts the beats to check if the rhythm is good” while mimicking the rhythmic chirping of a bird [translator’s/author’s note].
